VooDoo BBQ restaurant has been expanding across South Florida recently and we stopped that Ft. Lauderdale location on Andrews Ave just North of Cypress Creek.  VooDoo BBQ and Grill is a ‘fast casual’ concept where you order at the counter and they bring your food to the table when it’s ready.  The building is brand new the restaurant has been open for a few months now.  They offer New Orleans style BBQ with other favorites from the region.  The décor also matches the New Orleans flavor with all kinds of cool things hanging on the walls.  The colors are mostly yellow, purple, red and beige.  It’s a sharp looking place.

Greeting you at the door is s large wood pile to show off that their meat is smoked.  We got there at lunch on a Saturday and it wasn’t too busy so we took a few minutes to look over the menu screens.  They have sandwiches and platters for all of their meats…which include pulled pork, beef brisket and chicken.  They also have the famous Po-boy sandwich with fried shrimp.  The platters are served with 2 sides and also include baby back ribs.  Gumbo and Jambalaya are also available here too making it a total New Orleans trip.

We both ordered the platters.  The first order was the baby back ribs ½ rack with Mac N Cheese and mixed vegetables.  The menu says they have a slight spice to them, but we didn’t feel heat spice, just lots of flavor.  These were really good baby back ribs with a lot of meat on them.  The smoke flavor was throughout the meat and they were very tender.  I’m usually not a fan of baby backs, but these I would order again.  They were slightly sauced, but they also have 3 other sauces on the table to slather on. A vinegar based sauce, which was quite tangy and really good.  A classic sauce that was their sweet BBQ sauce, also very good…and a ‘spicy’ BBQ sauce that appeared to be made with Crystal hot sauce.  This was good, but too similar to a buffalo wing sauce.  The mac and cheese was hot and actually quite good.  Creamy and cheesy, but no special mix ‘ins’.  I would really love if they put little bits of smoked sausage in there or something to make it more ‘New Orleans’.  The mixed veggies were great.  I think they but butter on them because I ate them up in a snap.

The pulled pork was a nice portion of meat.  It looked really god and actually looked like pulled pork (some other places chop it).  We tried it without sauce to see the true flavor and really liked it.  It was not dry and had a nice smoky flavor.  The sauces enhanced the porky goodness and this is another dish we would order again.  The ‘Rattle Sneak Beans’ were good, but they could have used a little more kick of a spice.  The greens were also good.  We both thought they were packed with flavor and done perfectly.

Overall we really liked VooDoo BBQ and would definitely be back.  A quick solid BBQ meal at a good price point really isn’t that easy to find and they hit the mark.
